Need some tips on mowing your lawn? Cathy Isom tells us why experts say it’s OK to mow more often! That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
The warmer the temperatures, the taller the lawn grows… and quickly. And for some, mowing more often may be a necessity. Experts at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences say when you mow more often, you’re actually helping pre preserve the environment. Not to mention keeping your yard aesthetically pleasing.
Environmentally, proper lawn care can help prevent fertilizer and other nutrients from flowing into nearby waterways. Mowing frequently also helps increase canopy density, increases soil stability, and prevents soil erosion. Exactly how often you should mow depends on several factors, including the type of grass on your lawn, the season , and the amount of shade. Remember not to mow to low, to prevent scalping. Experts encourage you to use the one-third rule – in which you mow your grass no shorter than one third of its current height.
