Every citrus grower knows the importance of irrigation, and for irrigation, you usually need a well. What growers don’t always consider is how the depth of their well affects the quality of their water. Kelly Morgan, professor of soil and water science at the University of Florida, explained that well depth affects the amount of bicarbonates in the water. He said bicarbonates increase the pH of soil and decrease the roots’ ability to uptake nutrients.
