Proposed numeric nutrient water quality standards are causing great concern among those in Florida agriculture and Charles Shinn, Assistant Director of Government and Community Affairs with the Florida Farm Bureau Federation, says the proposal has several flaws.
Day two of the 18th annual Citrus Expo in Ft. Myers has growers talking with various exhibitors, including Rachael Walters, Horticulture Technical Sales Coordinator with Bayer Crop Science. She is just one of their representatives at this years Expo as I talked with her about some of the products they’ve been discussing with growers.
The 18th Annual Citrus Expo is showing record crowds and one of the big attractions is the seminars as Staci Braswell, director of Government and Community Affairs with the Florida Farm Bureau Federation, says they have several presenters speaking on some hot topics for the industry today.
The Florida Farm Bureau Federation is one of over 150 exhibitors at the 18th annual Citrus Expo Trade show. And Adam Basford, National Affairs Director, says that they hope to talk to citrus growers about the importance of a Farm Bureau Membership.
Record crowds attended the first day of the Citrus Expo Wednesday, visiting the sold out trade show, and packing the seminar hall to hear experts discuss the citrus industry’s hottest topics. In these reports, Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff tells what messages speakers have already delivered.
This is day two of Citrus Expo as the trade show is open from 8:00am until 2:00 pm with seminars getting underway at 9:15am.

More than 160 exhibit spaces are booked for product & service displays catering to commercial citrus growers from all over. A record number of 700 individual citrus growers have pre-registered for the event too, which will feature two days of seminars largely focused on citrus greening. These reports each preview some features that commercial citrus growers and industry leaders can expect at this week’s Citrus Expo at Lee Civic Center in Ft Myers. Among other things, the two day event on Wednesday and Thursday will offer 8.5 CEU credits for citrus growers attending the seminars and about the same number of CCA credits for Certified Crop Advisors who are in attendance too. Registration opens at 7:30 each day and growers who did NOT pre-register can still register and get their name badge and lunch tickets at the door. The event offers free admission to bona-fide commercial citrus growers, production managers and grove decision-makers, and non-exhibiting vendors must pay an admission fee. Well the Citrus Expo officially gets under way Wednesday, August 19, and Gary Cooper says that there is a reason why it’s referred to as the world’s premier citrus expo.
An advanced citrus production system should help citrus growers get into production more quickly than they do using traditional growing methods. Arnold Schumann, who will discuss the system’s benefits at Citrus Expo, offers a preview of his presentation.
Citrus Expo seminars Aug. 19-20 will focus on ways growers can deal with citrus greening and other challenges in the grove but will also address other important topics, including the economics of the citrus business. In the first report, Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff gives an overview of the scheduled economics presentations. In the second, Allen Morris previews his talk about a recent unusual juice pricing situation that has left growers in a bind.
In the first report below, University of Florida entomologist Michael Rogers discusses his planned Citrus Expo talk about aerial applications for psyllid control. In the second report, he tells what message growers will take home from his presentation.

University of Florida entomologist Lukasz Stelinski will focus on several aspects of psyllid control in his Citrus Expo presentation Aug. 19. He’ll discuss psyllid biology, low-volume sprays and new pesticide technologies. He and Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff discuss his presentation in the first report below. In the second report, Stelinski says Expo attendees will get a good take-home message about low-volume spraying.
In the first report below, multi-county citrus extension agent Steve Futch tells Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff about the talk he’ll give at Citrus Expo on various HLB scouting methods. In the second report, Futch says his presentation will help growers understand the importance of using different survey methods.
