One thing to ask yourself before beginning any business is if there is a need. Well Cathy Isom has a business idea there is definitely a need for. She has some pointers for you about getting started in the Beekeeping operation. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
The number of beekeepers in the United States has declined so much, the number of beekeepers is only around 100-thousand people for fun and profit. One knowledgeable beekeeper is needed for every 500 to 1,000 colonies.
If you’re thinking of getting started in the beekeeping business, here are some things to consider:
You’ll need the proper land and buildings, equipment and supplies, vehicles for hauling equipment, queen bees, fume boards, and feeders, just to name a few.
Costs to start a beekeeping business are not high. There are quite a few ways to make money from bees. Most beekeepers rely on honey and beeswax production and commercial crop pollination. Honey production depends on the availability of nectar producing plants.
Remember to protect your bees from chemicals as much as possible. Find a bee club in your community so you can attend bee club meetings as much as possible.
