Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. The kickoff to summer BBQ’s and family gatherings.  And, it’s the first long weekend of the season.  It could also mean a planning that first camping trip, as many campgrounds open this weekend for forest national parkthe camping season. Many people also are thinking about planning a day visit to our nation’s forests, grasslands, and parks. Getting to those spots could be a problem if you’re not sure where to go.

Tunnel Bustam of the U-S Forest Service says its best to start at the computer. Go online and look up locations and activities at your local forest or anywhere in the U.S.

Recreation-dot-gov, you can reserve any camping site that is available on the network there so you can plan your trip ahead of time.

Or locate camping facilities at your local forest to drive to on a last minute adventure and finding a spot on a First-come, first-serve basis.

Another useful online site is the forest services interactive visitor map.

And you’ll see green spaces identifying all of the forest service forests and grasslands. Hover your cursor over one of those locations. It’ll give you the name of the unit, and it will share with you all of the activities that can happen on that unit.
