Using Metagenomics to Investigate the Microbial Diversity of HLB-Infected Citrus Phloem

LAKE ALFRED, Florida. On February 17, 2010, UF/IFAS, Citrus Research and Education Center, Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. Citrus Hall will host Dr. Eric Triplett Dr. Eric Triplett, Professor and Chair of the Microbiology and Cell Science Department, IFAS, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Dr. Triplett will present his seminar entitled “Using Metagenomics to Investigate the Microbial Diversity of HLB-Infected Citrus Phloem.” The seminar is open to the public with doors open at 10:45 a.m. and the seminar beginning at 11:00 a.m.

After receiving his B.S. degree in Biology in 1976 from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, Dr. Triplett obtained his M.S. in 1978 from the University of Maryland, College Park in Botany and his Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of Missouri, Columbia in Agronomy. Following a postdoc in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Triplett became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside in 1982. In 1987, Dr. Triplett joined the Agronomy Department of the University of Wisconsin Madison. In 2003, following his Fulbright-sponsored sabbatical at the Australian National University in Canberra, Dr. Triplett was appointed to his current position at UF/IFAS as Professor and Chair of the Microbiology and Cell Science Department.

Dr. Triplett’s research interests include plant-microbe interactions and the drivers of microbial diversity in a wide variety of environments. He is best known for his work on symbiotic nitrogen fixation, non-pathogenic endophytes of plants, and microbial diversity in soil and aquatic systems. He has recently formed collaborations with UF colleagues to adapt his skills to such wide-ranging problems as citrus diseases and type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Triplett’s research program is funded by NSF, the USDA, and FCPRAC. His research program has produced over 100 articles in a wide range of peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Triplett has served as the editor of two books, written several review articles, is the inventor of six U.S. patents, is Editor-in-Chief of the Open Microbiology Journal, and serves on the editorial board of ISME Journal, a multidisiplinary journal of microbial ecology from the Nature Publishing Group.
