Cathy Isom tells us a lot of different ways of celebrating a refreshing and sweet summertime fruit. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Which fruit is made up of 92% water, refreshing, sweet, and is a summertime staple at picnics and outdoor cookouts? Why, yes, of course, it’s watermelon. And today is the perfect day to enjoy this delicious treat because it’s National Watermelon Day. Whether it’s by the slice, or mixed into a smoothie, Martini or Margarita, or even on the grill. There are many ways to enjoy and celebrate this amazing, mouth-watering fruit.
There are around 300 different kinds of watermelon in the United States and Mexico, from red, pink, white and yellow varieties. Watermelons are usually quite large and can tip the scales. The heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
