Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, scientists with Auburn University’s College of Agriculture and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System continue to share their expertise with Southern row crop production.
According to an article written by Paul Hollis with Auburn University, these researchers and specialists, along with others from throughout the nation, usually present their findings from the most recent production season during the annual Alabama Row Crops Short Course, normally held each December in Auburn. But due to COVID-19, last year organizers decided to take the short course online for the first time.
And, videos from that short course are available to view. Each one runs from 10 to 15 minutes and covers current research on pressing issues affecting Alabama farmers. The videos will continue to be promoted at 2021 winter production meetings.
Research presented by Auburn scientists was conducted throughout the pandemic, as the College of Agriculture and Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station proceeded with their experimental work in the face of unprecedented challenges. Failing to proceed would have resulted in the loss of one year’s worth of experimental data and a failure to perform on contracted research work.
The short course topics include issues like the cotton leaf roll dwarf virus or CLRDV. There’s a presentation about controlling nematodes in Alabama row crops, one on seed quality issues in peanuts, another about wild hog management, and even a crop market outlook.
So the 2020 Alabama Row Crops Short Course is being offered virtually in a pre-recorded format, where you can enjoy the presentations on your own schedule. To see the Short Course videos click here.
