Fairly Steady Beef Cattle Numbers in New Inventory Report

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released their annual Cattle Inventory Report, and as of January 1, 2021, the number of all cattle and calves in the U.S. totaled 93.6 million head, down slightly from the 93.8 million head on January 1, 2020.

All cows and heifers that have calved, at 40.6 million head, were slightly below the 40.7 million head on January 1, 2020. Beef cows, at 31.2 million head, were down 1 percent from a year ago. Milk cows, at 9.44 million head, were up 1 percent from the previous year.

And according to USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam, beef replacement heifers were up slightly from a year ago.

In Alabama, all cattle and calves totaled 1.29 million head, a 1 percent decrease from January 1, 2020.

The Florida inventory was up 1 percent from the previous year at 1.69 million head.

All cattle and calves in Georgia totaled 1.09 million, unchanged from 2020.
