USDA Releases Quarterly Grain Stocks Report

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released its Quarterly Grain Stocks report, which indicates old crop corn stocks on hand as of Sept. 1, 2020, totaled 2.0 billion bushels, down 10% from 2019.

Old crop soybeans stored in all positions were down 42%, and all wheat stocks were down 8% from a year earlier. Total corn stocks stored on farms, at 751 million bushels, was down 8% from 2019. Off-farm stocks, at 1.24 billion bushels, were down 12% from a year ago. Old crop soybeans stored in all positions totaled 523 million bushels.

Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 141 million bushels, down 47%, and off-farm stocks, at 382 million bushels, were down 41%. All wheat stored in all positions totaled 2.16 billion bushels. On-farm stocks were estimated at 705 million bushels, down 4%, and off-farm stocks were down 10% at 1.45 billion bushels.

The NASS Small Grains Annual Summary report found all wheat production totaled 1.83 billion bushels in 2020, down 5% from the revised 2019 total of 1.93 billion bushels. Area harvested for grain totaled 36.7 million acres, down 2% from 2019. The United States yield was estimated at 49.7 bushels per acre, down 2.0 bushels from 2019.

Key findings for the Southern Region

Alabama: Winter wheat production, at 5.04 million bushels, is down 18% from 2019. Winter wheat planted acreage, at 135,000 acres, is up 5,000 while harvested acreage, at 70,000 acres, is down 15,000 from the previous year. Yield averaged 72 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year.

Georgia: Oat production, at 1.08 million bushels, is up 31% from 2019. Planted acreage, at 80,000 acres, is up 10,000 and harvested acres, at 20,000 acres, are up 5,000 from the previous year. Oat yield is 54 bushels per acres, a 1 bushel decline from last year. Winter wheat production, at 4.68 million bushels, is up 67% from 2019. Winter wheat planted acreage, at 190,000 acres, is up 40,000 and harvested acreage, at 85,000 acres is up 35,000 from the previous year. Yield, at 55 bushels per acre, is down 1 bushel from last year.

South Carolina: Winter wheat production, at 4.85 million bushels, is up 124% from 2019. Winter wheat planted acreage, at 110,000 acres, is up 40,000 with harvested acreage at 95,000 acres, an increase of 50,000 from the previous year. Yield averaged 51 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year.
