For the first time in 50 years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is making changes to egg product inspection methods. FSIS is aligning the Egg Products Inspection Regulations final rule to be consistent with current requirements in the meat and poultry products inspection regulations.
According to a story from Stephanie Ho, USDA is modernizing the egg product inspection rules to give the industry more flexibility to make products that are safe for consumers.
FSIS Administrator Paul Kiecker says the new rules on egg products inspection also include requirements other than just that producers follow hazard analysis and standard sanitation guidelines.
FSIS will also assume regulatory authority over egg substitutes and freeze-dried egg products, which pose the same risk as egg products and will be inspected in the same manner.
