Cotton and Peanut Crop Update

Both the cotton and peanut crops continue to develop. According to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey, there was an overall improvement in the cotton condition this past week.

Rippey has the latest outlook for cotton squaring and setting bolls.

And Rippey has the latest look at peanut pegging and condition for the week ending July 19, 2020.

In Alabama, 88% of the cotton crop was squaring, which compares to 86% last year and the five-year average of 85%. Of the crop, 41% was setting bolls, which compares to 45% last year and the five-year average of 49%. Of the peanut crop, 88% was pegging, which compares to 85% last year and the 5-year average of only 74%.

In Florida, 67% of the cotton crop was squaring, which compares to 82% last year and the five-year average of 69%. Of the crop, 45% was setting bolls, which compares to 41% last year and the five-year average of 30%. Of the peanut crop, 84% was pegging, which compares to 80% last year and the 5-year average of 80%.

In Georgia, 88% of the cotton crop was squaring, which compares to 87% last year and the five-year average of 87%. Of the crop, 49% was setting bolls, which compares to 56% last year and the five-year average of 50%. Of the peanut crop, 88% was pegging, which compares to 89% last year and the 5-year average of 86%.
