Georgia peanut farmers interested in learning more about how their financial support is being used in research projects are invited to the annual Georgia Peanut Commission Research Report Day on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The event will be held at the National Environmentally Sound Production Agriculture Laboratory (NESPAL), located on the UGA Tifton campus off Rainwater Road in Tifton, Georgia.

“This is grower dollars that we are simply entrusted to; to direct in the research projects that we think are going to be beneficial; their return on investments to us as Georgia farmers,” said Donald Chase, Georgia Peanut Commission Research Committee chairman. “It’s a good day for growers because it gives us some ideas of things we’re wanting to try or at least keep an eye on some of this research going forward. It also helps us on the research committee as we’re going into this year’s research evaluation where we make decisions on the projects for next year. It serves a dual purpose. For farmers who would really like to dig in a little more into the nuts and bolts of some of the research, I think it’s a really good opportunity.”

The Georgia Peanut Commission approved $653,901 in research project funding for the 2019-20 research budget year. The research projects included proposals submitted from the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and USDA Agricultural Research Service.

“There’s a lot involved about being a peanut farmer and we need to be looking at everything to try to be the most efficient that we possibly can,” Chase said. “I encourage farmers that if you would like to see what we’re doing with your money, with our money, come and spend the day with us.”
