Senator Kelly Loeffler

It was announced this week that Georgia Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler will replace Republican David Perdue on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Loeffler, an Illinois native who grew up on a family farm, was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Johnny Isakson.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue issued the following statement after Senator Loeffler was sworn in to the Senate and named to the Agriculture Committee:

“I want to congratulate Senator Loeffler on her swearing in and for her appointment to the Senate Agriculture Committee. As the daughter of an active farming family, Kelly understands the needs of the agriculture community and will be able to bring this knowledge and experience to her work in the Senate. I look forward to working together on ways we can best serve our farmers and ranchers across the country and in our home state of Georgia.”

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas said of Loeffler, “Her farming roots make her a welcome addition to the Committee.”

The 49-year-old Loeffler is recognized as the 26th woman currently serving in the Senate.

The Senate seat formally occupied by Isakson will face a special election for the seat this year, and the winner will serve out the last of Isakson’s term and face reelection in two years.
