Cathy Isom has some of the important do’s and don’ts when growing an organic garden. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Growing an Organic Garden-Do’s and Don’ts

Organic gardening is an entirely different way of gardening compared to conventional gardening, so its important to know the do’s and the don’ts.

Organic gardens require the addition of 4 inches of compost per year; using only organic fertilizers; maintaining a moist soil; and using a mulch composed of straw, chopped leaves, a light layer of chemical-free grass clippings, newspaper and cardboard.

Some of the don’ts include: not using fast acting fertilizers, not composting diseased plants, never applying chemical loaded water, herbicides, or pesticides.  Even fertilizers labeled for organic use can be damaging to an organic vegetable garden in high quantities.

Apply fertilizers every 4-6 weeks rather than all at once when you need to use them.
