Vidalia Onions
The new crop of Vidalia onions is in the stores by now. A report from the grower region says it is a pretty good crop. That doesn’t mean all growers had a good year. But overall, the size and quality of the crop gets a good rating.
The Vidalia, like most other crops, is a labor-intense crop. It takes a lot more than a man and a tractor. Weather is another important factor. What is important is getting the crop ready for market. It’s not critical, but planting and harvest has a lot to do with the size. Don’t think size isn’t important; for growers it is.
A true Vidalia is grown in a 20-county region of Georgia. You can plant it anywhere. But by law, if it isn’t in that 20-county region, you cannot market it as a Vidalia onion. That’s the law.
Anyway, it’s a good crop and you can look for it now.
