Crop Production for August-Southern Region

crop productionU.S. corn production for 2017 is forecast at 14.2 billion bushels, down 7 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 169.5 bushels per acre. Soybean production is forecast at a record high 4.38 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last year. All cotton production is forecast at 20.5 million 480-pound bales, up 20 percent from 2016. All wheat production, at 1.74 billion bushels, is down 1 percent from the July forecast and down 25 percent from 2016. Peanut production is forecast at a record high 7.43 billion pounds, up 31 percent from 2016.

Key findings for the Southern Region from the August Crop Production include:

Alabama: Corn for grain production is forecast at 38.8 million bushels, up 3 percent from 2016. Yield is forecast at 165 bushels per acre, up 45 bushels from last year. If realized, this will be a record high yield for corn. Cotton production at 860,000 bales is up 22 percent from last year. Peanut production is forecast at 866 million pounds, up 39 percent. Soybeans production at 19.4 million bushels is up 48 percent from last year. Peach production at 2,000 tons is forecast down 39 percent from last year.

Florida: Cotton production forecast, at 160,000 bales, is down 18 percent from 2016. Peanut production is forecast at 555 million pounds, down 3 percent from last year. Sugarcane for sugar and seed is forecast up 4 percent at 17.5 million tons.

Georgia: Corn for grain production is forecast at 57.0 million bushels, up 2 percent from 2016. Yield is forecast at 178 bushels per acre, a 13-bushel increase from last year. Cotton production at 2.9 million bales is up 33 percent. Peanut production is forecast at 3.86 billion pounds, up 38 percent from 2016. Yield is forecast at 4,600 pounds per acre, up 660 pounds from last year. If realized, this will be a record high yield and production for peanuts. Soybeans production at 7.48 million bushels is up 4 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at a record high 44 bushels per acre, up 14 bushels from last year. The 2017 peach production forecast is down 76 percent as a result of a reduction in chill hours followed by several days of freezing temperatures in mid-March.

South Carolina: Corn for grain production is forecast at 43.2 million bushels, down 3 percent from 2016. Yield is forecast at 137 bushels per acre, an increase of 10 bushels from last year. If realized, this will be a record high yield for corn. Cotton production at 460,000 bales is up 84 percent of previous year’s hurricane damaged crop. Peanut production is forecast at 494 million pounds, up 41 percent from 2016. If realized, this will be a record high production for peanuts. Soybeans production at 13.3 million bushels is up 6 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at a record high 36 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from last year. The 2017 peach production forecast is down 80 percent as a result of a reduction in chill hours followed by several days of freezing temperatures in mid-March.
