Agri View: Hemp, an Unlikely Crop

Dan Agri View, Specialty Crops

Everett Griner talks about how the demand for hemp goes unheard in today’s Agri View.

Hemp is the crop that was once commonly grown in some states. Widely used in making such things as rope and twine. It was declared illegal to grow when marijuana became too common. Hemp is a genetic member of the same family of plants as marijuana.

Now there is an interest in re-establishing hemp as a legitimate crop.

You see hemp can be used in making more commercial products than you can believe. Not just rope and twine. Textiles, fabric, paper, carpeting, insulation products, oil, cosmetics, and on and on and on. It isn’t likely that hemp will ever be accepted as a legitimate crop. Mainly because it is too closely associated with marijuana. Otherwise it could become a crop worth $300 million dollars a year. But, you know why it isn’t likely to become legitimate, no matter how much it is worth.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
