Through respiration, soil microbes provide key benefit to plants, scientist says

Just when you thought soil microbes couldn’t possibly be more helpful, Dr. Will Brinton tells us they provide another, often overlooked benefit to plants. Microbes take in sugars from plant roots and respire carbon dioxide, Dr. Brinton explains, which then combines with the soil water to form a weak solution of carbonic acid. This gentle carbonic acid solution helps further weather minerals and trace elements around the roots, which become available for plants to take up for their growth and health. Watch the video (2:30). It’s science you can really dig.
