Extension agent Ryan Atwood says citrus growers who learned about advanced citrus production systems at a field day last week wanted to know what alternatives are available when they have to replant groves. This Wednesday and Thursday, growers can learn how to cope with many industry problems at Citrus Expo.

In the first report posted below, Lake County Extension Agent Ryan Atwood explains why fogging in groves for citrus psyllid control is not allowed, and what is being done about getting product labels changed to allow for this application method. Many believe fogging shows promise in the battle against the spread of psyllids and citrus ‘greening’ disease. In the second report, more from Atwood regarding other concerns of citrus growers his region of Florida.

In the northern portions of Florida’s citrus belt, it appears that HLB, known as ‘greening disease’ is not as prevalent in commercial grove areas. In these two reports, some comments from the region’s citrus extension specialist, Ryan Atwood, about what growers in his region are thinking with regard to HLB, and how they are dealing with the threat.
TAVARES — The Lake County Extension Office is hosting an informational meeting about weed control in citrus on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.
“Central Florida citrus growers responded in a study we conducted in 2007 that weed control was the second most important topic,” said Ryan Atwood, Citrus Agent for the Lake County Extension Office. “To address this, we are holding a ‘Nighttime OJ’ meeting on weed control.” Read the rest of this entry »

During the month of October, a series of greening identification and survey training sessions will be conducted around the state by the Florida Cooperative Extension Service Citrus Extension Agents. The purpose of these sessions is to aid workers in properly identifying greening. These 2-hour training sessions will discuss the current known locations of greening, scouting recommendations, greening symptom identification, and conclude with hands-on identification of samples.
