While a rare July cold front worked its way across the region this week, we’ve been experiencing some hot summer temperatures. And according to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey, the nation’s cotton crop seems to be flourishing from the heat.

In Alabama, 88 percent of the cotton is squaring, that compares to only 82 percent this time last year. 50 percent is setting bolls. 87 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to only 79 percent last year at this time.

In Florida, 88 percent of the cotton is squaring, that compares to only 62 percent this time last year. 50 percent is setting bolls. 84 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to only 74 percent last year at this time.

In Georgia, 90 percent of the cotton is squaring, that compares to 87 percent this time last year. 60 percent is setting bolls. 92 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to 89 percent last year at this time.
