Alabama Extension Hosting Alfalfa in the South

Dan Alabama, Cattle, Education

The annual Alfalfa in the South Workshop will be held May 7 at the Cattlemen’s Park in Troy, Alabama. The one-day event, hosted by Alabama Extension, starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. It will include up-to-date research with alfalfa in the Southeast. Following lunch, a farm tour will feature a newly established stand and allow management discussions.

Dr. Kim Mullenix, an Alabama Extension beef specialist, said this is the first time Extension has hosted the Alfalfa in the South workshop in Alabama.

“Previously, Georgia was the host of the series, using the model of classroom education and farm demonstration sites to create awareness about alfalfa management,” Mullenix said. “The purpose of this program is to highlight regional research efforts to bring alfalfa production back into the light as a potential part of our forage production systems in the Southeast.

Program topics include:

  • Establishment
  • Variety Selection
  • Weed and Insect Control
  • Management
  • Research Update
  • Economics
  • Producer Panel
  • Afternoon Field Tour
