You need to grow something for privacy. Why not combine food and privacy together? Cathy Isom has some ideas about hedges or shrubs you could grow in your yard that offer more than just privacy. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Edible Hedges You Need to Grow

Serviceberries

When thinking about how to landscape your yard for privacy, chain link, wooden, or picket fencing may come to mind. Or if its hedges or shrubs, evergreens, such as conifers or boxwoods tend to be a popular choice. But there is the potential to use the hedges to build solid wall of foliage and also grow food. And, it could be a mix of plants rather than a solid row of the same species. If all or many of them are edible, it could also equate to more interesting harvests over a longer period of time. Here are some great shrubs to consider if you decide to try your luck at a living fence.

  • Serviceberries
  • Hazelnuts
  • Bush cherries
  • Blackberries/Raspberries
  • Currants
  • Goumi
  • Feijoa

It’s true that growing a living wall will take longer than building one, but the dividends later on far exceed that of a typical fence.
