Trucking Industry Bracing for ELD Mandate

Dan Cattle, Industry News Release, Livestock, Pork

truckingThe Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate for the trucking industry is expected to go into effect December 18th, causing a predicted impact to the livestock industry.

The National Pork Producers Council has asked for an exemption based on what it calls “an incompatibility” between federal hours of operation rules and how the livestock industry actually operates. The request states: “Livestock haulers are not and will not be prepared to meet the December 18th compliance date because, in part, the current ELD marketplace doesn’t meet the needs of livestock haulers.”

Trucking Industry News reports the Western Equipment Dealers Association also requested an exemption. The mandate will go into effect after years of protest and public debate.

However, recent surveys show 39 percent of carriers and owner-operators are planning to comply with the mandate before the deadline, and another nine percent already have.
