Scott, Cabinet Consider Okeechobee Land Deal

Dan Cattle, Environment, Industry News Release

scottGov. Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet next week are slated to consider a $5.7 million deal that would help protect more than 2,500 acres of land in Okeechobee County. Under the proposed deal, the state would buy a conservation easement on property known as Corona Ranch.

Conservation easements protect land from development, but owners typically can continue to use the property for such things as agriculture.

The Corona Ranch property, which has long been used as a cattle ranch, drains to the Kissimmee River, which flows into Lake Okeechobee, according to Cabinet information. The state would buy a 2,523-acre easement from Corona Holdings XIV LLC.

Scott and the Cabinet are scheduled to take up the issue during a meeting Tuesday.
