National Hot Dog Day

Dan This Land of Ours

While the entire month of July is known as National Hot Dog Month, today, July 19th, has been declared National Hot Dog day by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. One of the biggest celebrations will take place on Capitol Hill, as it has for several decades, where more than 1,000 lawmakers, Administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff will gather in a courtyard for one of the biggest hot dog picnics ever held.

But everyone in America will be able to indulge, as well. Whether it’s cooking hot dogs on the backyard grill or visiting one of a handful of restaurants that will be offering deals on hot dogs–even restaurants that don’t necessarily specialize in wieners, frankfurters or sausages. The season for hot dogs kicked off on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that Americans will eat seven billion hot dogs during these months. That’s 818 hot dogs per second and more than a third of the hot dogs eaten per year. That’s also a lot of ketchup, mustard, onions, and sauerkraut!
