Healthy food in school-provided lunches has long been a topic of concern for parents at one elementary school in Arvada, Colorado. That’s why community leaders and parents of students at Foster Elementary decided to step up and repair the garden that has recently fallen into a state of disrepair.
A garden created by a local Rotary chapter 20 years ago, and intended to be used by the school and the community, recently fell victim to vandalism. It also didn’t have a proper irrigation system in place. Maintenance proved to be difficult and time-consuming to maintain.
School leaders and the community have since come together, along with the help of grants and donations from local businesses, to get the garden back up and running. Some of the improvements include ADA compliant beds, wider walkways for handicap accessibility and implementing a new irrigation system. Next, they hope to build a fence around the garden to help deter vandalism.
