Best Time to Mow?

Cathy Isom continues her series on lawn and garden care this week by filling you in on what you need to know before you mow for the first time this spring. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

If your lawn was treated properly in the late fall then its had all of the winter months to germinate and get ready to wake up when the temperatures begin to rise.
But before reaching for the lawn mower and garden tools and getting to right to work, one thing you may need to do first, is wait. Especially if your lawn is not fully green. Because cutting it too early could do more harm then good. When you do start up the mower for the first time, Lawn and Garden Expert mowDennis Patton says don’t cut it too low or scalp it, because it could hurt new shoots before they’ve matured.

The other thing is when you mow so short like that in early spring, all you do is open that soil up for more sunshine and weed seeds love nothing more than spring sunshine and warm soil to start to grow.

So give it a few more weeks. And if you just can’t wait, it’s ok to reach for the rake.

I’m Cathy Isom…
