It doesn’t matter what the crop is or where it is grown. Without herbicides and pesticides farmers downstreamwouldn’t produce enough to make it worthwhile to plant a crop. Disease and insects would consume more than the grower would harvest. Few people, other than farmers, know how strenuously these chemicals are regulated. You see, some of every chemical a farmer uses either blows off or is washed off by rain into the soil. But it doesn’t stay in that soil. Rainfall washes it into ditches, streams and ultimately into rivers where it is carried into our lakes into the ocean. Ultimately, the accumulated combination begins to affect the quality of that water. At that point little or nothing can be done. So, what is the answer? What are we doing? Well, there is no answer. But, science is working on it.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
