I just don’t understand international trade, at least the way it’s structured anyway. I saw an orange with a tag that read ‘a product of Africa’. I found none that said Florida or California. There were apples from New Zealand and Chile on the same counter.
I prefer to support the American farmer, not one oceans away. Why do we need to import apples when we grow over 100 different varieties in 12 different states? And although it may have flavor, an African orange certainly doesn’t look as tasty as one grown in Texas, California or Florida.
How it looks and what it tastes like is one thing, but supporting the American farmer is another. People who don’t farm make trade deals. Farmers who feed us have very little input on international trade. Well that’s at least how I feel anyway.
