USDA Buying Eggs to Ease Surplus

Randall Weiseman General, Livestock, Poultry

We told you last week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced plans to purchase approximately 11 million pounds of cheese from private inventories to not only assist food banks and pantries, but also help reduce a cheese surplus.

Now USDA announced they will also purchase $11.7 million worth of shell eggs and egg products to ease a surplus as farmers and egg processors try to cope with falling prices. USDA says the products will go to various food nutrition assistance programs, and to charitable institutions.

According to Agri-Pulse, the actual dollar amount spent will depend on bid prices received after a formal solicitation.
