Crops

Corn

Corn is the most widely produced feed grain in the United States, with much of the crop providing the main energy ingredient in livestock feed. Corn is also processed into a wide range of food and industrial products including cereal, alcohol, sweeteners, and byproduct feeds. ERS offers analysis and data that include:

  • More than 90 million acres of land are planted to corn, with the majority of the crop grown in the Heartland region.
  • Animal unit calculations provide a indicator of corn and other feed use by livestock type.
  • Food, seed, and industrial uses are projected for the current and upcoming marketing year.
  • The United States is a major player in the world corn trade market, with between 10 and 20 percent of the corn crop exported to other countries.  The United States accounts for about 40 percent of world exports.

The U.S. fruit and tree nuts industry consists of a wide array of crops and products generating, on average, over $25 billion in farm cash receipts annually. Produced on only less than 2 percent of U.S. agricultural crop land, farm cash receipts from this sector account for 13 percent of the total receipts for all agricultural commodities and 7 percent for all crops. Foreign markets serve as outlet for less than 20 percent of overall U.S. fruit and tree nut supplies while nearly half of the available supplies for domestic consumption come from imports.

Comfort Foods, Sickbed Snacks and Celebratory Nosh: What are Americans’ Favorites?

Majorities use their favorite comfort food as a pick-me-up, and they don’t feel guilty about it.

Classic Italian food setting with pizza, pasta, salad and wineThere’s really no debate that food can be a comfort. Whether stressed or depressed, almost everyone has a favorite go-to dish that seems to help make everything all better. Just over half (53%) of Americans indicate they eat more when they’re stressed and two-thirds (67%) agree they use their favorite comfort food as a pick-me-up. But there’s no shame here. As the ultimate food connoisseur, Julia Child, once said: “Everything in moderation… including moderation.” Americans seem to hold a similar viewpoint, as two thirds (66%) indicate they don’t feel guilty after indulging in their favorite comfort food.

So which food seems to do the trick? For Americans, pizza lands in the number one spot as the ultimate comfort food.

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll® of 2,252 U.S. adults surveyed online between December 9 and 14, 2015.
