Montgomery, AL- John McMillan, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, released the following statement in response to the passage of the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Enforcement Act of 2015 (H.R. 774).

“During the 2015 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature, the State of Alabama recognized the need for congressional action to curb foreign illegal fishing in U.S. waters. In a joint resolution sponsored by Senator Rusty Glover of Mobile, the state encouraged Congress to address this issue. I am pleased to say that with leadership from Congressman Byrne, the U.S. House of Representatives responded and passed a bill to strengthen enforcement against illegal fishing in our waters.”

“The Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Enforcement Act of 2015 is a huge step toward protecting our coastal economies, fishermen and businesses. Gulf fishermen work hard to conserve our marine resources as well as to put food on tables across the nation. My hope is that the Senate will address this issue and eliminate poaching and illegal fish sales from our waters.”

“I want to thank Congressman Byrne for his leadership as well as Congressman Mo Brooks for his support on this issue.”
