Putnam: Saving Our Signature Crop

Dan Citrus, Florida, Industry News Release

Friend,

Like sunshine and white sandy beaches, citrus is synonymous with Florida.

But citrus greening, a bacterial disease that is spreading through Florida’s citrus groves, poses an existential threat to Florida’s signature crop. In just 10 years, citrus greening has cut Florida’s annual citrus harvest in half. That’s why we must take bold action to reverse the decline in citrus production.

I’ve requested $18 million in funding this year to help save Florida citrus. This funding will support critical research, grow clean citrus stock, and remove and replant diseased trees.

We cannot give up on Florida’s vitally important citrus industry, or the more than 64,00 jobs it supports.
