forestsTALLAHASSEE, Fla. –Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam and the Florida Forest Service recognize the benefits of Florida’s working forests for tomorrow’s global recognition of the International Day of Forests.

“Florida’s working forests are carefully managed to provide timber products while sustaining and protecting forest resources for future generations,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam. “Florida’s $14 billion forest products industry helps keep working forests in business so that they can continue to provide critical environmental benefits for Florida.”

Private forest owners, who own 63 percent of Florida’s forests, grow, harvest and replant healthy trees that provide numerous environmental benefits to flowers, other plants and wildlife. Working forests contribute to energy conservation, improved habitat for birds and animals, and improved air and water quality.

“Working forests have a significant positive influence on air quality and water supply,” said State Forester Jim Karels. “The presence of healthy, sustainable forests is vital for the protection and conservation of our natural resources.”

The Florida Forest Service manages more than 1 million acres of public forest land while protecting 26 million acres of homes, forestland and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfire.
